We were inspired to create this recipe to bring a playful twist to classic chicken nuggets. We made the savory chicken mixture and shaped them into donuts, which is super fun to make and eat. Moreover, the best part of these donuts is the shatteringly crisp golden brown outside enclosing each bite packed with flavor from paprika, garlic, and pepper.

Another thing we love about this recipe is that it can be made ahead of time and frozen for use at any time, making it extra convenient. Whether you’re serving them as a party appetizer, packing them in a lunchbox, or simply enjoying them as a unique snack, these chicken donuts paired with the zesty dip are the ultimate crowd-pleasing experience.

Ingredients’ Breakdown for Crispy Chicken Donuts

For the Chicken Mixture

  • Chicken breast: We are using the skinless, boneless chicken breast for the donuts. You can use boneless chicken thighs, too, but they are too fatty, making them hard to shape and manage. You can add flour and breadcrumbs to make the chicken thigh mixture manageable, though.
  • Onion: The onion adds a mellow oniony flavor to the crispy chicken donuts.
  • Red bell pepper: It might be a surprise ingredient. It might be a little sweet tasting, but it actually balances out the savory flavors of the donuts.
  • Parsley: We are adding fresh parsley to the donuts since it adds a herby, fresh flavor.
  • Salt: Salt makes everything taste savory and better.
  • Black pepper: Black pepper adds a spicy peppery kick.
  • Garlic powder: It gives a garlicky flavor.
  • Paprika: It adds a smoky, spicy, and sweet flavor to the donuts.
  • Breadcrumbs: Breadcrumbs act as a binder and help in forming the donut shape of the mixture as well.

For the Coatings

  • Flour Mixture: We are using a combination of All-purpose flour and cornstarch for the dry coating. This coating seals in the moisture of the donuts and also makes the egg coating stick to it.
  • Egg Mixture: The egg mixture has eggs, salt, pepper, and milk. We are seasoning the eggs to add a layer of spice over the donut. This mixture will be a little thinner than the usual egg coating.
  • Breadcrumb Mixture: We are using a combination of fine breadcrumbs and coarse breadcrumbs. We love how this mixture gives the crispy and uneven texture to the donuts, making them super delicious.

Ingredients For the Sauce

  • Mayonnaise: It is a perfect base for a creamy sauce. We are using store-bought but you can use homemade as well.
  • Ketchup: Ketchup adds a little touch of sweetness.
  • Sriracha: Sriracha makes the sauce a little tangy and spicy. It balances out the flavor or ketchup and mayonnaise really well.

Prepare the Chicken Mixture

  1. In a food processor, add all ingredients together — chicken breast pieces, onion, red bell pepper, parsley, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and breadcrumbs.
  2. Process until the mixture becomes smooth and sticky, with all ingredients finely combined.

  3. Shape the mixture into donut rings (you can use a round cutter and a small bottle cap for the center).
  4. Place them on a tray and refrigerate for 1 hour to firm up.

Coat the Donuts

  1. Dredge each chicken donut in the flour mixture, coating evenly and shaking off excess.
  2. Dip into the egg mixture to cover completely.
  3. Roll in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure a crisp outer layer.
  4. Place the coated donuts on a tray and let them rest for 5 minutes before frying.

Fry Until Golden

  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat for shallow fry.
  2. Gently lower in a few donuts at a time — don’t overcrowd the pan.
  3. Fry for 3–4 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Make the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, and sriracha until smooth and creamy.
  2. Adjust spice level to taste.
